How does a vegan diet help with weight loss?

Dear Lauren,

Thanks for the question!

Regardless of what a person eats there is only one way to lose weight-eat fewer calories than you burn. Weight loss is all about calories.

A healthy, high-raw, low-fat, whole food vegan diet is a great way to get all the nutrients you need, while eating fewer calories than you need to maintain your current weight. This type of vegan diet is helpful for losing weight because it is a high-nutrient, low-calorie diet.

If you want to lose weight you should eat mostly fruits and veggies. You should eat way less fat and refined carbohydrates.

Here are 4 guidelines to make you successful at weight loss and give you superb health:

1) Eat food, not food products-

We evolved getting all nutrients we need from whole foods. The fact that we are here, after thousands of years, is evidence that we thrive eating foods in their natural state. As the amount of processed, refined, denatured food products increase, so to does the incidence of diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes increases. Eat whole, fresh food and thrive. Fresh, whole corn is better than corn chips made from refined corn flour.

2) Eat plenty of vegetables, and fruits-

These foods provide needed vitamins, minerals, fiber, and carbohydrates, and can help you lower your intake of fat. Focus on eating Green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, chard, red and green leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce have the highest nutrient to calorie ratio. You get loads of nutrients and few calories. Green leafy vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein. Yes, protein. 100 calories of romaine lettuce has almost twice as much protein as 100 calories of steak! Eat at least 5 servings of leafy greens everyday.

3) Choose foods low in fat, saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol-

In addition to helping you lose weight eating less fat will reduce your risk of heart attack and certain types of cancer. Keep your saturated fat consumption to less than 10% of your total calories. Cholesterol only comes from one place in the diet, animal products. Stop eating animals and you stop eating cholesterol. If it comes from a plant it contains absolutely zero cholesterol. Trans-fats are in hydrogenated vegetable oils. Do yourself a favor, keep all refined oils and animal products out of your diet. You will look and feel amazing!

4) Eat a variety of foods-

This will ensure you get the energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber you need for good health.

Choose fresh, organic foods whenever possible-they are the best. Choose whole foods in their natural state. Eat food, not food products- Doing so leads to greater feelings of satisfaction; which reduces cravings and the likelihood of eating more than you need.
