Raw Food & Fitness-Day 18

It is day 18 of our 100-Day Raw Food & Fitness Challenge.

Do you know what one of the best things to do on a bright, sunny day in the Pacific Northwest is? Go for a run! So we did. We did a great 7 miler with the kids today. What did we do when we got home? Had a recovery meal.

After a workout it is important to start the recovery process as soon as possible. You see, exercise is the stimulus for your body to change, recovery is when it changes. When you exercise, cardio or strength training, you deplete your body's stores of glycogen.

Glycogen is basically a sugar molecule. It is our way of storing carbohydrates for quick energy.

For about 2 hours after a workout your glycogenase, that is the enzyme required to synthesize new glycogen, levels are at there highest. If you eat a carbohydrate rich meal during this time you speed up your recovery process.

Exercise is also dehydrating. So, another thing you want to do following a workout is hydrate yourself.

Here is the perfect solution and our raw food recovery meal of choice:

Banana, Date, Spinach Recovery Drink

Not only is this delicious, it also:

• Hydrates your body

• Provides you 109g of carbs, 12g of fiber and 7g of protein

• Provides you with 134mg of calcium

• Provides you with a whopping 1900mg of potassium

(Potassium plays an important role in electrolyte balance, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, beating of the heart, energy production and protein synthesis.)

Ingredients:

3 ripe Bananas

2 soaked Medjool Dates

1-2 large handfuls of Spinach

1 quart pure, filtered Water

Preparation:

Put Bananas, Dates, Spinach and Water into your favorite blender (ours is a Blendtec Total Blender, some prefer the Vita-Mix Blender. Both of these are high-power blenders perfect for making all kinds of raw treats.) and blend until smooth. Then, the best part-

Drink and enjoy!
