Wow! Derrick and I have been eating raw food for 30 straight days now. We are feeling great...and so are the kids.
My kids have started to love fruits and veggies! I haven't forced them to "eat their veggies," or bribed them, or disguised fruits and veggies in more "kid friendly" foods (cakes, muffins, cookies, etc.). My kids know exactly what they're eating and they love it!
I think when given the opportunity, kids will naturally choose healthy raw foods over the yucky stuff (packaged, processed, sugar and fat-laden foods). We moms and dads simply have to make fresh fruits and vegetables available to our children. First, we have to actually have to buy those foods. Then we have to prepare them (and by "preparing" I mean ONLY washing and chopping them into kid-sized servings), then just make them accessible (put them in the fridge or on your countertop, or cupboards in easy-to-reach places).
My daughter loves apples, oranges, and baby papaya, so we always have a bowl of one or more of those fruits available, within her reach, on the counter. The apples are totally easy for her to just grab and munch, and the oranges and papaya require very little "work" on my part to make edible for her.
My 2 year old son absolutely love romaine lettuce and celery! (I never would've known that were it not for this Raw Food and Fitness Challenge.) So for him, I always have lettuce rinsed and in a bowl in the fridge, and celery rinsed, sliced, and in it's bowl in the fridge. Both love carrots and we always have carrot sticks in the fridge, or in a bowl on the kitchen table. Our daily green smoothies are becoming quite popular with the kids too--who would've thought?
This 100-Day Raw Food and Fitness Challenge has made all of us healthier. Even though the kids still eat cooked foods, their diets are mostly raw, and this is by their choice--they choose what to eat throughout the day, and because we have only healthy, extremely nutritious foods available, they eat only those foods.
It's easy, and I really mean it--it's easy to get your kids to eat more fruits and veggies! Buy them, make them available, then LET YOUR KIDS CHOOSE when to eat fruits and veggies, how much, and if (in the beginning it will be "if," but I promise that won't last more than a few days) they want to eat raw fruits and vegetables. Let them help choose which fruits and veggies to buy too--let them participate and they're more likely to eat them.
I think we need to trust our kids--trust that they want to be healthy and trust that they will make healthy food choices. We simply have to give them the opportunity (make healthy foods and option in our homes). And kids love fast food right? What could be faster (and more nutritious) than an apple, some celery or carrot sticks, or an easy-to-peel banana? My kids are loving their fruits and veggies, and I'm certain yours will soon be loving them too.
