Where do you get protein on a raw food vegan diet? Someone asks me this question everyday. I can count on it. Why are people so obsessed with protein? It is not like thousands of people are running around with protein deficiency symptoms like apathy, inactivity, flaky skin, fatty liver, and edema of the belly and legs.
Hey, wait a minute that sounds like the majority of people in the United States. Could it be that despite ingesting almost twice their daily protein needs they are really deficient? I don't think so.
Protein deficiency is always accompanied by malnourishment caused by undernourishment, not getting enough calories. (Not really an issue here in the States where everyone eats too many calories.)
I think the apathy, inactivity, flaky skin, fatty liver, and edema of the belly and legs in Americans is caused from malnourishment from overeating nutrient poor foods.
Anyway, protein in a raw vegan diet comes from plants. All the protein on the planet comes first from plants. Plant protein is high quality, complete protein. If you eat a whole food vegan diet of sufficient calories it is impossible not to get enough protein.
In fact, calorie for calorie green leafy veggies have about twice the protein as meat. In 100 calories of sirloin steak you get about 5.4g of protein. In 100 calories of romaine lettuce you get about 12g of protein.
So, if you are worried about getting enough protein, eat your raw food, eat your lettuce, spinach, chard, kale and collard greens. Eat 'em!
