In the last few days we have been asked why, since we are eating a raw food diet, we don't eat raw milk.
Here are our 3 reasons:
#1 It isn't healthy. While raw milk may be healthier than cooked milk, it certainly isn't health food. Mammary secretions, in addition to lymph, blood and pus, contain all the biologically active hormones of the animal that produced them. It isn't healthy for humans to consume cow or goat hormones. Mammary secretions also contain biologically active viruses and bacteria. Consuming the viruses and bacteria in cow or goat milk isn't healthy for humans either. Smallpox comes to us courtesy of cows and there is mounting evidence that so does leukemia.
#2 It isn't necessary. We have no nutritional requirements for the mammary secretions of another species. Our survival, our lives, are not any more dependent on cow or goat mammary secretions then their lives are dependent on human mammary secretions. Can you imagine a cow drinking human milk? We get all the calcium and protein we need from plants.
#3 It isn't ethical. Given the fact that consuming the mammary secretions of another species isn't healthy or necessary makes doing so unethical. It is unethical to enslave female animals for their reproductive capacity. It is unethical to forcefully impregnate an animal, take her baby from her when it is born and then take the mammary secretions meant for her baby for our own use.
So, there are our 3 reasons for not including raw milk on our raw food diet. It isn't healthy. It isn't necessary. It is unethical.
