Raw Food & Fitness-Day 78

"Are you feeding your children an exclusively raw food vegan diet?"

"Are your kids vegan?"

"What do your children eat?"

We've had lots of questions lately regarding what we're feeding our kids.

Here is our 2 part answer:

Part 1 Our 3 children are all vegan, and while they eat a high percentage of their calories from raw food, they are not exclusively raw. We encourage them to eat healthy food by discussing the importance of health, the importance of taking care of ourselves, and how our food choices impact our health and the health of the planet and all beings on it. We model healthy eating, and we always make the most nutritious foods available to them at all times.

Part 2 To Kirsten and I, there is nothing more important than the health and well being of our children. It is true, Kirsten and I are obsessed with health(that is part of why we are eating a low-fat raw food vegan diet) and we are voracious readers on the subject. One of the people we trust for health information is Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He is a board-certified family physician who specializes in preventing and reversing disease with nutrition. Two of our favorite books by Dr. Fuhrman are Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss and Disease-Proof Your Child: Feeding Kids Right

In his book, Eat to Live, Dr. Fuhrman classifies foods based on their nutrient density. That is the number of identified, phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals per 100 calories. The foods with the highest nutrient density are green leafy vegetables. The foods with the lowest are refined oil and sugar. We focus on feeding our children the highest nutrient dense foods so they eat as many green veggies as they like, raw or lightly steamed, beans and legumes, lots of fruit, starchy veggies, like potatoes and sweet potatoes, raw nuts & seeds and some whole grains.

There you have it, the answer to: "Are you feeding your children an exclusively raw food vegan diet?" "Are your kids vegan?" "What do your children eat?"
