How Many Calories in 1 Pound of Fat?

Did you know there are enough calories in a pound of fat to run a marathon?

It is true. It takes about 100 calories to run 1 mile. Since there are 26 miles in a marathon and 3500 calories in a pound of fat there are plenty of calories (with some to spare) to run a marathon.

What does all this mean for your vegan weight loss program?

This means if you want to lose 1 pound of fat, you will need to burn 3500 more calories than you consume. If you want to lose one pound of fat in one week, you will need to create a caloric deficit of 500 calories per day.(500*7=3500)

When you eat fewer calories than you need, your body uses stored energy (fat) to make up the difference.

The best way to achieve such a deficit is through a combination of diet and exercise.

Dieting doesn't work long term.

This is because on a diet you program your body to be more efficient at storing fat.

Your body is constantly trying to maintain a balanced state of health. When you consistently eat fewer calories than you need, your body compensates by slowing down your metabolism to match your caloric intake.

Based on the physiological laws governing our bodies, the only way to lose weight and maintain it long term is to eat less and move more.
