Clean and Sick

Stories are powerful. The stories we tell, and are told, shape our lives. In our society stories come with products and consequences. One of the stories we have been told and sold is associated with:

Throat irritation and cancer Asthma Eczema Hives Severe itching and rashes Nausea Headaches Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome

Because we buy into this story we pollute our bodies. We make ourselves, our children, our companion animals, and our planet sick.

What is the story?

The story is that spots on your drinking glasses, lyme deposits on your shower, streaks on your windows, toilets that don't sparkle, countertops that don't gleam, and homes that don't smell like a spring breeze means we're filthy, destined to get sick, unworthy and unloveable.

Another part of this story says that dirt and germs are the enemy; something to be fought and eradicated.

So, how do we clean our homes and eradicate dirt and germs?

We go to war! We go to war with weapons. Weapons developed by chemical companies. We go to war with chemical weapons. Many of the weapons with which we go to war were developed by chemical companies during war time as killing agents of one sort or another. These chemical weapons have been repackaged and called "cleaners". Why do we bring toxic chemicals into our homes where they make us sick? Because of a story. We are so frightened of germs, dirt, and odors that we're willing to believe the thousands of commercials (via internet, television, newspaper, magazine, radio, etc.) telling us we need to buy toxic products in order to be clean (our hair, teeth, skin, feet, hands, etc.), have a clean home (bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, carpet, clothing, bedding; every inch of every last thing in our homes), and be liked and loved by friends, family, and anyone who happens to see us! We're are causing harm our bodies by waging toxic chemical warfare in our homes with the very same things used to kill humans in past wars.

There is another story of course. The story we would like to tell you, and hope you will be open to "trying out" is a story whose focus is cleanliness that doesn't harm you, or your family.

Our health, our lives, are much more important than a glistening toilet bowl, streak-free windows, and floors so shiny we can see our own reflections.

But alas, a little cleaning is necessary (for some of us more often than others) so let's get back to making it healthy. Ingredients that have been derived naturally and are kind to humans and the entire planet, clean well, don't pollute, and save us money. Did you know that ounce for ounce, homemade cleaning concoctions cost around one-tenth the price of comparable commercial products? We've found white vinegar, baking soda, and water are all we need for most of the cleaning at our house--three cheap, safe, and simple ingredients can make your home and our planet truly cleaner.

Ultimately, the health of all (ourself, our loved ones, our friends, our animal companions, all animals, plants--our entire planet) is more important than a shiny, glistening, germ-free, "flower scented" home. This isn't to say we shouldn't clean and shouldn't want a clean living space; we can have the clean house, just one that has been cleaned with non-toxic and gentle ingredients. Ingredients which cause no harm, don't contribute to illness, and were not created to hurt others in the first place.

Veggie Stir Fry

Yummy Veggie Stir Fry

A simple, loaded with nutrients, meal to help your reach your “ideal you.”This stir-fry can be eaten alone, or with brown rice, quinoa, or your favorite cooked whole grain. You could also serve this with whole grain/sprouted tortillas or pita bread. Eat this for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and you’ll thank yourself for giving you such a magnificent meal!


1 cup broccoli florets

1 cup cauliflower florets

1 cup spinach

1 cup chopped celery

1 cup chopped cabbage

1 cup firm tofu

1-2 tablespoons sesame oil

2 tablespoons tamari, or Bragg’s Liquid Aminos

1 teaspoon fresh ginger, or ½ teaspoon dried ginger powder

3-4 cloves garlic, minced

In a medium-sized saucepan, sauté broccoli, tofu, and cauliflower in sesame oil for 3-4 minutes over medium heat. Place this mixture in a bowl after it’s finished and set aside. Place remaining ingredients in the saucepan and cook over medium heat and let simmer for 1 minute. Add the broccoli-cauliflower-tofu mixture and cook covered for just about 3 minutes. Mix everything well before serving.
